Nothington, the new band from former Tsunami Bomb’s guitarist, Jay Northington, packs a punch for a debut album. The album name, All In, almost sums up the whole CD in two words, Nothington pull out all the stops to bring Punk mixed with a touch of good ole’ Rock & Roll. Jay Northington’s vocals, strong and full of phlegm add a gruff edge to every song, but also make some lines completely inaudible. The CD is backed up by powerful guitars wailing in the back, almost in defiance to what punk today has become. They howl along with Jay’s vocals and the rolling bass lines that all together create a wonderful wall of sound.

The greatest points on the album start from the beginning with Where I Stand; a classic punk rock anthem with a sing-along chorus and edgy guitar lines. Bottom Line the second track of the CD picks up where the first left off adding a darker mood to the CD and a seamless verse-to-chorus set up make it another hit. Going Home is one of the more rock songs on the CD where twangy guitars and a female background vocalist assist Jay to create a punch-in-the-face rock song. Awake for Days is the first song where the background vocalist takes the lead position with a great chorus, but a flawed verse and drawn out guitar fills bleed it of its quality. This Means War is the last track on the CD to qualify for a spot on your “Favorite Song of the Month” collection. It comes right out with a strong shared vocal performance and a chorus that you can’t get out of your head.

Nothington - All In is a great buy for any blue-collar punk rocker. The rousing guitar and vocals are enough to make it a keeper, but there is just some unknown that lies in the CD keeping it from being a classic. I hope to hear more of this band in the coming years; I can only hope they will learn how to clean up the vocals.
