shock/denial/anger/acceptance The title of this cd had me a little worried.
Geez, does this guy sound bitter or what? I got the CD home and I grew even more worried, song titles like “God Gave You to Everyone”, “Jesus Saves”, “Angels of the Disappeared”. Oh great, so did Dr. Noah Drake find Jesus or something? But he’s still pissed off since there’s a song called “My Depression”. Nice, sounds like a real fun CD. Woo hoo.

The first song on the CD is “Perfect” and starts off with a really “Rick Springfield"-ish guitar riff. Great rock song, kinda angry lyrics but I wasn’t really listening to the lyric as much as the melody, which was really upbeat. Turns out “God Gave You to Everyone” is a really hard rock song, not a preachy song about Jesus saving you. Which leads me to the song “Jesus Saves” which is really heavy, then kinda softens, then gets heavy again. The chorus surprised me, “Jesus saves white trash, baby like you”. Guess Rick isn’t preaching to us after all! Thank god!! (ouch, bad pun!)

Rick Springfield kind of hits a lot of different styles with this CD. “Alien Virus” is really bluesy, while “My Depression” borders on reggae! It starts off kinda reggae, but then gets really heavy, only to drift back into the reggae again. You get such a great variety with this CD, he really mixes it up.

Highlights: “Shoot Your Guru” is an incredible instrumental, about a minute long, but I’ve listened to it a million times already. Its an acoustic guitar and a sitar-something very soothing about it. “The Invisible Girl” is a favorite of mine because there’s a hint of the “Jessie’s Girl” guitar solo towards the end! Gotta love when ole Rick throws us a “Jessie’s Girl” bone. “Eden” is my favorite song on the CD. It starts off with some great synthesizerish popiness, I just like the flow of it.

Rating: 4 stars-so many songs, so little time. One question, when is RS EVER going to get the credit he deserves? This CD is awesome, one you could listen to over and over again. It would’ve received a perfect score if not for the omission of my favorite tune “Intergalactic Circus of Wonder” from EFX. Hey, I’m a sucker for Vegas shows, what can I say.
