Lights Resolve - Prelude EP

4 out of 5 stars

The Angel Sings
The Suffering
Another Five Days

Program Music
Who We Are
Will You Find Me?

Lights Resolve hails out of Long Island, NY as a three-piece band. With Matthew Reich on vocals, guitar, and keys, Neal Saini on drums and percussion, and Sherman on bass, backing vocals, guitar, and piano, their debut EP is jam packed with hip-shaking tunes, notable instrumentals, and a power ballad, all jam packed into only six songs.

The EP starts off strong with “The Angel Sings” posessing a catchy chorus that just begs for you to sing along with the “ohh”s [“ohh the angel sings, ohh the angel cries”], before progressing into “The Suffering”, a passionate mid-tempo song, seeming to question people’s actions as far as history goes. [“History repeats itself, and tomorrow we’ll see how, this is war, but what for?”]

“Another Five Days”, the stand out track for me, is up next, starting slowly by teasing with just a heavy bass line before eventually adding a guitar riff, vocals, and then drums once the chorus gets close. Again, the “ohh”s of this chorus are begging you to sing along, and definitely make you want to dance. It’s just that catchy and pleasing to the ears. “Program Music” seems to be the intermission of the CD, it being a one minute and 38 second instrumental, with a random changing tempo of beautiful piano playing that sounds to be in the minor mode [for those not familiar, major is higher, where minor has a bit of a darker sound to it]. “Who We Are”, the second to last song on the EP, makes you want to shake your hips as soon as it starts, with it’s fast drum beat setting the mood right from the get-go, which seems to be a song about accepting yourself, warts and scars alike. [“this is who we are, all the warts and scars, and we won’t fade out”]. “Will You Find Me” is the power-ballad closer, soft and acoustic, unlike the rest of the EP. It leaves you in a calm state, ending the emotional ride of an EP.

Lights Resolve is here, and they have the potential to take over the music scene by storm with this debut. This EP is worth a listen, and a listen, and another listen and… well, you get the point!
