Rev Theory comes out with “Light It Up”, which is their follow up release to Truth Is Currency from 2005. If you’re not familiar with this group, one thing you should know is that the band has worked their collective asses off (figuratively, not literally… cuz that would hurt) to earn the well-deserved success they’ve had so far, and although many newer fans to Rev Theory might think they’re a brand new band, they’ve actually been at it for awhile now… seven years to be exact. They’ve been around, and they’ve paid the dues. Also, if you’re a fan of WWE wrestling, you probably heard “Light It Up” as the official theme song of Wrestlemania 24, as well as RAW superstar Randy Orton using “Voices” as his theme music.
Anyway… down to the nitty gritty! I first got this album in a press kit with an in-depth review by Lonn Friend (the editor of RIP Magazine in the late 80’s and early 90’s). With all the raving he did over the band in his review, I thought there was no way this could possibly live up to that. I’m glad that I was wrong, because now this album is in regular rotation on my iPod! It starts off with the hard-charging aforementioned “Hell Yeah”, which to this date is Rev Theory’s anthem. The thing is, as much as this track rocks, it’s far from my favorite one on the CD. There’s a lot of emotion and depth throughout, especially on tracks like “10 Years”, “Broken Bones”, “You’re The One”, and “Far From Over”. I couldn’t decide between the latter two tracks which one I liked better, but that’s because this is one of the few albums I can play from start to finish without skipping over any “filler” tracks. Anybody can relate to “You’re The One” and lyrics like “time after time I keep running in circles, I can’t deny what is real”.
I’ve played this for several close friends, and it’s become an excellent “road trip” album. Rich Luzzi’s vocals sound like a cross between M. Shadows (Avenged Sevenfold), Jeff Keith (Tesla), and Josh Todd (Buckcherry). Buckcherry has certainly taken off over the last couple of years, and I think Rev Theory is one of the next bands to take a similar leap into the mainstream. I’ve been told that they’re an awesome live band, so I’ll be there December 2nd at First Avenue (one of the greatest rock venues in the world!) to see for myself.
